continued... Dr. Hess is the award-winning author of eight books and more than 75 articles in professional journals and the popular press. Her writings cover topics on nutrition, portion control, smart shopping, healthy cooking and special dietary needs of children, pregnancy, and individuals with diabetes. The Review of Dietetics: Manual for the Registered Dietitian Exam, now in its 10th edition, is a valuable resource assisting dietitians in attaining certification. Both The Healthy Gourmet (Collins Publishing 1994) and her most recent book, Essentials of Healthful Cooking (Williams-Sonoma 2004), were nominated for the prestigious James Beard Award. Dr. Hess is currently working on Essentials of Nutrition for Chefs, written with Catharine Powers, MS, RD, a partner in Culinary Nutrition Associates. After completing an internship and master’s degree in dietetics, Dr. Hess studied at LaVarenne Cooking School in Paris, earned a Gold Medallion from the German Wine Academy, and studied at the French Pastry School and Washburne Culinary Institute in Chicago. For her contributions to the profession and service to the public, she received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Simmons College and was named Northern Illinois University’s 1998 Distinguished Alumnus.
